Abandoning the softer acoustic pop elements of their previous few records, Stereotomy is a much heavier, more electronic, and rock-oriented concept album. The word "stereotomy" refers to the art of cutting solids (like stone or wood) into precise shapes, which Woolfson used as a metaphor for how modern society, fame, and pressure mold and restrict the human personality. This was notably one of the earliest albums to be recorded entirely on full digital equipment.
