Once in Vienna, Lota (posing as Luiza) discovers her father, Ludwig Palfi, a successful music composer, plans to marry a woman named Irene Gerlach. Horrified at the prospect of her father remarrying, she devises a plan to sabotage the engagement. She visits Irene at her home and, with childish determination, tells her that the wedding is off. The emotional strain takes its toll, and she soon falls ill with a high fever.
