In 2016, acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, celebrated for visually stunning epics like Hero and House of Flying Daggers , took on his most ambitious project yet: a $150 million U.S.-China co-production titled . The film combined a powerhouse international cast—Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, and Jing Tian—with a fantastical premise: the legendary Great Wall of China, reimagined as humanity’s last line of defense against a horde of monstrous creatures that emerge once every 60 years.
