The movement officially took root in the 1920s, championed by figures like Marcel Kienné de Mongeot. A journalist and former aviator, de Mongeot saw naturism as a cure for the tuberculosis that had afflicted his family, as well as a continuation of ancient Greek traditions celebrating the human form. In 1926, he founded the country's first naturist club, the Sparta Club, near Evreux.
Naturist pageants today operate under extremely strict ethical codes. The World Naturist Federation (WNF) and modern clubs enforce rigorous "informed consent" policies, meaning participants must fully understand how their images will be used. The widespread distribution of vintage videos—especially those involving minors—is highly discouraged and often violates the ethical guidelines of the naturist community. Furthermore, after the 2013 ban, these events are no longer legal in France.
