Epson printers do not possess a physical sensor to measure how wet these foam pads actually are. Instead, the printer relies on a digital counter embedded in its mainboard firmware. Every time the printer performs a cleaning cycle or spits out excess ink, a specific number of points are added to this internal counter. Once the counter hits 100% of its programmed maximum limit, the printer locks itself down to prevent excess ink from leaking out of the base of the machine and damaging your desk or internal electronics.
