The film follows Harry Smith (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical and amoral American black marketeer who sells weapons to Syrian rebels fighting against French colonial rule. The plot thickens when he is caught by the French and forced to work with Colonel Feroud (Lee J. Cobb), the head of French intelligence. To complicate matters, Harry begins a relationship with Feroud's mistress, Violette (Märta Torén).
