The Bahamas has a compelling history that began with its original inhabitants, the Lucayan people, a branch of the Taino who migrated from Hispaniola and Cuba around the 11th century. There were an estimated 40,000 Lucayans living in the Bahamas when Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the Americas on the island of San Salvador (now called Watling's Island) in 1492. After a period of lawlessness and piracy, the islands became a British Crown Colony in 1717. The first Royal Governor, a reformed pirate named Woodes Rogers, brought law and order to the Bahamas in 1718. The country remained a British colony until it gained independence on July 10, 1973.
