Directed by the visionary and often controversial Ram Gopal Varma, the film was a massive project. In a historic move for Indian cinema, Varma announced that the story would be released in two parts, a decision driven by the sheer depth of the narrative. He explained that the story's "rise and fall of Ravi and the emergence of Suri" could not be done justice in just one film. The first part, "Rakta Charitra 1" (transl. "History of Blood"), would depict the rise of Pratap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi), while the second part would focus on his eventual downfall at the hands of Suri (Suriya).
