As one retrospective review noted, “When you hear the bangs, crashes and whirrs that most music made in 1984, it is amazing to hear how pure and unaffected the debut album by Sade, Diamond Life , still sounds”.

The album was an instant success. Propelled by timeless singles like "Your Love Is King," "Hang On to Your Love," and the global smash "Smooth Operator," Diamond Life climbed to No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 5 on the US Billboard 200. It won the 1985 Brit Award for Best British Album and has since sold over 10 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling debut albums of the decade.
