If you passed on Rogue Corps at launch because it didn't feel "Contra" enough, v1.3.0 is the redemption arc you’ve been waiting for. The developers have stripped away much of the tedium and doubled down on the chaotic, co-op fun.

Mechanically, Rogue Corps is often mislabeled. While it resembles a twin-stick shooter, it retains the soul of Contra through its emphasis on platforming and directional aiming. The developers attempted to modernize the 2D plane into a 3/4 isometric view, and while the camera can occasionally be a foe, the gunplay remains satisfying. The game leans heavily into the "Creature Feature" aspect of the Contra lore. Set after the Alien Wars, the game explores the darker, grotesque underbelly of the conflict. The tone is significantly more irreverent and tongue-in-cheek than the stoic heroism of Bill Rizer. Characters like Kaiser, a half-man half-alien cyborg, fit the bizarre setting perfectly. This departure from the serious military aesthetic allows the game to be weird, loud, and self-aware—a vibe that is complemented by the over-the-top dialogue and action.
